Billionaire Bill Gates cheers on Aussie mixed doubles champions
The Australian Open mixed doubles final on Friday saw a unique blend of sports and high-profile spectators. While the Rod Laver Arena was only half full, it was the presence of billionaire Bill Gates that added a touch of glamour to the event. Gates, a philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder, has been a regular supporter of Australian player John Peers, who, along with partner Olivia Gadecki, claimed their second straight Australian Open mixed doubles title.
The victory, achieved after a come-from-behind performance against French pair Kristina Mladenovic and Manuel Guinard, was particularly special for Peers. He shared that Gates was there to witness the triumph, having seen him just before they took to the court. This isn't the first time Gates has shown his support; he was also present at the 2024 Paris Olympics when Peers and Matthew Ebden won gold.
Peers' family was also in attendance, with wife Danielle and daughters Ellie Rose and Harper Grace cheering him on. He expressed the joy of playing in front of his loved ones, emphasizing the importance of having them close during his travels. The win marked a significant achievement for Gadecki and Peers, as they became the first pairing to win back-to-back Australian Open mixed doubles titles in 37 years.
The ceremony also took an intriguing turn when French opponent Kristina Mladenovic publicly questioned Australian Open CEO Craig Tiley's future, asking if it was his last tournament in charge. Tiley, linked to a potential new role at the US Open, responded with a firm 'no'. Despite the speculation, Tiley has declined to comment further.
Looking ahead, Peers and Gadecki are optimistic about their future at Melbourne Park, aiming for a third consecutive title. Gadecki, in particular, is motivated to improve her singles ranking, hoping the victory will give her a boost for the future.
