Get ready for a musical revolution in Brisbane's Lang Park! The city is about to rock with almost double the number of concerts, thanks to a bold new trial that aims to bring more major artists to Queensland. But here's where it gets controversial...
Under this one-year experiment, Lang Park will host a whopping 21 concert dates this year, up from a previous limit of just 12. Minister for Sport and Racing, Tim Mander, believes this will give Queenslanders the chance to experience an even greater variety of top-tier talent.
"These concerts are an economic boost for the city, and Queenslanders deserve to see the best acts. We've seen it with the recent success of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the sold-out Ed Sheeran shows," Mander said.
But not everyone is convinced. Councillor Seal Chong Wah for Paddington Ward raises concerns about the future of Lang Park's concert scene, especially with the upcoming construction of the 63,000-seat Victoria Park stadium.
"With another stadium in Brisbane, the competition for limited concerts will be fierce. It seems like a rushed decision by the state government without proper community consultation," Wah said.
Special envoy for major events in Queensland, Tony Cochrane, sees the trial as a strategic move towards a bigger tourism vision for the state.
"Suncorp's team has done an excellent job, but hosting shows there is challenging. It requires temporary generators, road closures, and complex setup and teardown processes," Cochrane explained.
Entertainment mogul Harvey Lister, who manages venues like the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, supports the announcement, citing the rise in outdoor stadium shows.
"Brisbane, as Queensland's capital, needs to be able to accommodate these events. Increasing shows at Lang Park will provide much-needed certainty for the touring industry when bidding for events," Lister said.
And the excitement doesn't end there! British superstar Ed Sheeran will be gracing the stage at Lang Park for three nights this weekend, joining the ranks of global icons like AC/DC, Lady Gaga, Elton John, and Taylor Swift who have previously performed at the venue.
