Margate Main Sands beach is set to become more accessible for people with mobility issues, thanks to a £95,000 boardwalk project proposed by Thanet District Council (TDC). This initiative is part of a £180,000 budget allocated for one-time improvements to public spaces in the 2026/2027 fiscal year. The funding will also cover new lighting at St Peter's Recreation Ground and litter clearance on the A299, totaling £50,000 and £35,000 respectively. Council leader Rick Everitt, inspired by the success of a similar boardwalk in Broadstairs, suggested the Margate boardwalk to enhance accessibility and safety for residents and visitors. The council aims to secure additional funds for a potential boardwalk at Ramsgate as well. The budget will be reviewed by councillors and then presented to the full council for a final vote on February 26th.
