The American's French Frustration: Jorgenson's Near-Miss in Faun Drome Classic
In a thrilling display of cycling prowess, Matteo Jorgenson, riding for Team Visma - Lease a Bike, narrowly missed out on victory in the Faun Drome Classic 2026. But here's where it gets controversial... Jorgenson, despite his impressive performance, had to settle for second place, twice in a row, to promising young French riders.
On Saturday, he finished fourth, but on Sunday, he came agonizingly close to the top spot. However, Romain Grégoire of Groupama - FDJ United had other plans, sprinting to victory in the final stretch. This is the part most people miss: Jorgenson's journey to the finish line was not without its challenges.
After a disappointing fourth-place finish on Saturday, where he was outclassed by the talented Paul Seixas, Jorgenson returned with a sharper focus on Sunday. Seixas's absence opened the door for Jorgenson to showcase his skills, and he did not disappoint. With just two days of racing under his belt this season, he was drawing closer to that elusive first win.
"Second place is never the goal, but Grégoire was the better sprinter today," Jorgenson admitted. "Our team rode tactically, and at one point, we had a numerical advantage. I seized the moment, but it wasn't enough to secure the win."
As the race reached its climax, both Jorgenson and Grégoire felt the surge of strength. They broke away from the pack on a slight descent, 17 kilometers from the finish line in Étoile-sur-Rhône. They fended off challenges from Quinn Simmons, the US national champion, and Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda. Then, Benoît Cosnefroy gave it his all in a solo pursuit, but he was caught with just 3 kilometers remaining.
The peloton was closing in, and it seemed like a group sprint finish was on the cards. But Grégoire had other ideas. With 200 meters to go, he opened his uphill gallop and proved his strength, winning by a couple of lengths. Jorgenson, despite his valiant effort, had to settle for second once again.
This French frustration is a familiar feeling for the American rider, but he remains optimistic. He's on an upward trajectory and is poised for a breakthrough win. Next up, he'll tackle Strade Bianche and then Tirreno Adriatico. Jorgenson is excited about his form and is looking forward to the Italian races, where he hopes to finally claim that elusive victory.
"I'm thrilled with my performance so far this season. To be on the podium in my first two races is a great feeling. I can't wait to see what the Italian races have in store," he said.
