The High Cost of Touring: A Metal Legend's Dilemma
In a recent interview, Thomas "Angelripper" Such, the iconic bassist and vocalist of German thrash metal pioneers SODOM, opened up about his decision to scale back the band's touring activities, a move that has sparked curiosity and debate among fans.
"I've been in this game for a long time, and now I want to prioritize my family and explore other passions," Angelripper shared. "My kids are grown, and I want to make the most of this chapter of my life."
But here's where it gets controversial... Angelripper revealed that the primary reason for their reduced touring schedule is the exorbitant costs associated with playing shows in the United States. "The visa process and the financial burden are simply not worth it," he explained. "It's a shame, as we have a dedicated fan base over there, but the logistics are daunting."
And this is the part most people miss... Angelripper's decision is not just about the money. It's about finding a balance between his passion for music and his desire for a more relaxed lifestyle. "I'm 63, and I want to enjoy my golden years," he said. "Touring is demanding, and I want to spend more time doing things I love, like hunting and spending quality time with my family."
However, Angelripper made it clear that this is not a full retirement. "I'm still very much involved with the band and our re-releases. I just need a break from the relentless touring schedule."
The interview also touched on the challenges faced by international musicians when it comes to U.S. artist visas. "The paperwork is extensive, and the process is complex," Angelripper noted. "It's a barrier that many artists are choosing to avoid."
So, what's next for SODOM? Angelripper remains uncertain. "I'm taking it day by day. If I feel the urge to perform, I'll be back on stage. But for now, I'm content with my decision."
