Australia's Vaccination Success Story is Unraveling – And Our Children Are at Risk
For years, Australia boasted one of the world’s most impressive childhood vaccination records. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we proudly achieved the national target of 95% full vaccination among one-year-olds, shielding our youngest citizens from devastating diseases like measles, mumps, and whooping cough. The signs are undeniable. Whooping cough cases are at their highest in 35 years. Measles exposure sites have popped up in Sydney and regional New South Wales, even in hospitals and schools. Thankfully, Australia's federal and state governments recognize the urgency. They've developed a new national vaccination strategy focusing on rebuilding trust, strengthening the healthcare workforce, utilizing data effectively, and increasing accountability.
But here's the crucial test: will the upcoming federal and state budgets back this strategy with the necessary funding?
